Newborn Baby Pumpkin Hat~ free crochet pattern ~

I have been busy getting my crochet projects done for the holidays, such as Halloween decor and gifts for the holidays! I worked on a newborn baby pumpkin hat last week (during a 3-hour car trip!) and although I do not have time to test the pattern for other sizes, I thought I’d share the newborn size with you all!

SUPPLIES

• Crochet hooks I/5.5mm
• Yarn needle (I use Clover Chibi Bent Tip Needle Set)
• Stitch marker (optional)
• Any worsted weight yarn, I used the following in my sample:
  • Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Fern (color A)
  • Red Heart Super Saver, Pumpkin (color B)

NOTES

• The Newborn Baby Pumpkin Hat measures 5.5″ in height (not including the stem) and 6.5″ in width.
• Hat is made in 0-3 months/newborn size, approx. 13″ – 15″ head circumference.
• Start each round in the same stitch as your starting chain.
• End or join each round by slip stitching to the beginning dc stitch, not the ch 1.
• Gauge (tension): 6 dc stitches = 2″ **CHECK YOUR GAUGE**

ABBREVIATIONS

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
fpdc = front post double crochet (click link for tutorial)
sc2tog = single crochet 2 together / sc decrease
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
rep = repeat
* – * = repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

Hat

With color A, work magic ring, ch 1.

Round 1: Work 10 dc in magic ring, sl st to first dc to join (10 sts)

Fasten off color A and change to color B.

Round 2: ch 1 (does NOT count as a stitch here and throughout), dc in same st, fpdc around same st; * dc in next st, fpdc around same st*, rep * around, sl st to first dc (not the ch 1) to join (20 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, dc in same st, dc in next st, fpdc around same st; *dc in next st, dc in next st, fpdc around same st*, rep * around, join (30 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, dc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, fpdc around same st; *dc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, fpdc around same st*, rep * around, join (40 sts)

Rounds 5-12: ch 1, *dc in first 3 sts, fpdc around post from the previous rnd*, rep * around, join (40 sts)

Round 13: ch 1, sc in each st around, join (40 sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Stem
The stem is worked in a spiral, do not join or turn.

With color A, work magic ring, ch 1.

Round 1: Work 4 sc in magic ring (4 sts)

Rounds 2-4: sc in each st around (4 sts)

Round 5: *sc, 2 sc in next st*, rep * around (6 sts)

Round 6: *sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st*, rep * around (8 sts)

Fasten off and sew on top of the hat.

Vine

With color A, ch 15, work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Then, continue working 2 or 3 sc in each ch randomly until you’re back at the base. Sl st in next st and repeat for the second vine.

To make the second vine shorter or longer, chain less or more. I made 11 chains for the shorter vine and repeated the same instructions. When finished, sl st in next st and fasten off, leaving a yarn tail to sew on to the hat. Weave in all ends.
